What is GHK-Cu?
GHK-Cu is the copper(II) complex of the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine. Copper Tripeptide-1 and prezatide copper are recognised names associated with this GHK-copper complex.
Is GHK-Cu the same as GHK?
No. GHK is the copper-free tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine; GHK-Cu is its copper complex. Studies using GHK alone should not automatically be presented as GHK-Cu studies.
Is AHK-Cu the same as GHK-Cu?
No. AHK-Cu contains alanyl-histidyl-lysine rather than glycyl-histidyl-lysine. The widely cited 2007 hair-follicle study tested AHK-Cu, not GHK-Cu.
What benefits of GHK-Cu are actually supported by research?
Laboratory and preclinical studies support effects on extracellular-matrix biology, fibroblasts, angiogenesis and tissue-repair pathways. Human evidence is much smaller: there is an older positive diabetic-ulcer trial, mixed cosmetic skin findings, and a small 2026 eyebrow study. These findings do not establish every marketed benefit.
Does GHK-Cu reduce wrinkles?
The evidence is not strong enough for a simple yes-or-no claim. Preclinical work is supportive and historical cosmetic reports are positive, but robust controlled human evidence is limited. A small randomised post-laser study found no objective GHK-Cu advantage for wrinkles or overall skin quality.
Does GHK-Cu help hair growth?
Direct GHK-Cu human evidence is limited. A 2026 split-face study in 18 adults reported improved eyebrow hair count and diameter with a 2% topical GHK-Cu serum. Important older hair studies often cited for copper peptides tested AHK-Cu or a 5-ALA plus GHK combination instead, so they are not standalone GHK-Cu evidence.
What are the known side effects of GHK-Cu?
There is not enough consistent human evidence to give reliable side-effect frequencies for GHK-Cu across routes. Small topical studies provide some tolerability data, while the FDA says human safety information for injectable compounded GHK-Cu is limited and highlights possible immunogenicity related to aggregation and peptide impurities.
What is the half-life of GHK-Cu?
A validated human systemic half-life for administered GHK-Cu was not identified in the sources reviewed. Modern reviews caution that GHK-Cu pharmacokinetics are complicated by peptide breakdown, copper exchange and formulation-dependent speciation.
What doses of GHK-Cu have been studied?
Human research has used different topical formulations for different questions, including a 2% serum in the 2026 eyebrow study. There is no single validated dose that applies across topical, transdermal or injectable research, and no validated injectable human dose was established by the sources reviewed.
Is topical GHK-Cu the same evidence as injectable GHK-Cu?
No. Most direct human evidence is topical. Injectable GHK-Cu has much less human safety evidence, and FDA has flagged route-specific concerns about aggregation, peptide impurities and immunogenicity.
Can GHK-Cu pass through intact skin?
Skin-delivery studies show that penetration depends strongly on the skin layer and delivery method. In one laboratory study, almost no peptide or copper crossed intact human skin over nine hours, while microneedle pretreatment greatly increased permeation. That is delivery research, not an administration recommendation.
How strong is the human evidence for GHK-Cu?
It is limited compared with the size of the preclinical literature. A 2026 aesthetic systematic review found 20 eligible studies, of which 18 were preclinical and two were randomised controlled trials. The human studies are also heterogeneous in formulation and outcome.
