One-time purchase prices; delivery and conditional discounts excluded. Daily cost uses the recorded label serving. Comparison amounts are not personal dose recommendations. Unknown Prime eligibility is not treated as confirmed.

Magnesium forms explained

The form used affects both the elemental percentage and how well it's absorbed - a higher headline mg figure does not automatically mean more usable magnesium. Capsule, tablet and powder are just delivery formats - use the Format filter above to narrow by those; the form itself is what determines elemental content and absorption.

Oxide

Inorganic magnesium compound

Compare
Declared elemental magnesium
Evidence context
Small studies find lower absorption than several soluble salts

Compound mass and elemental magnesium are different. An absorption result does not establish how well this product treats a symptom.

Citrate

Magnesium associated with citrate

Compare
Elemental amount and full serving
Evidence context
A soluble form discussed in comparative absorption research

Check whether citrate is used alone or blended with oxide. A supplement is different from a magnesium-citrate laxative medicine.

Bisglycinate (Glycinate)

Magnesium associated with glycine

Compare
Actual ingredients, including any oxide
Evidence context
The name alone does not prove better sleep or tolerance

A clear total does not reveal how much magnesium each salt contributes in a blend. See the sleep evidence below for the specific preparations studied.

Malate

Magnesium associated with malate

Compare
Declared elemental amount
Evidence context
Muscle and energy marketing is not a clinical result

Compare the actual formula and dose. Do not assume that a named salt establishes superior symptom relief.

L-Threonate

Magnesium associated with threonate

Compare
Elemental amount as well as compound mass
Branded source
Magtein where disclosed

A branded ingredient and its research are separate from verified testing of the finished product.

Taurate

Magnesium associated with taurine

Compare
Elemental magnesium and other ingredients
Evidence context
A cardiovascular claim needs outcome-specific evidence

Often appears in blends; do not infer the contribution of each form from the total.

Hydroxide

Inorganic magnesium compound

Compare
Elemental amount and intended use
Medicine distinction
Also used in laxative and antacid preparations

Follow the specific product instructions. A medicine regimen is not a general nutritional supplement target.

Magnesium dosage: read the elemental amount

Compound weight versus elemental magnesium

The WeightWorld listing declares 1,420 mg of compound supplying 200 mg elemental magnesium in two capsules. Lindens headlines 500 mg magnesium oxide but declares 300 mg elemental. These are recorded label amounts, not independent measurements. Use the product analyses linked in the comparison to inspect each source.

Daily cost and the value calculation
Measure Calculation Use it to compare
Price per day Pack price ÷ recorded daily servings The cost of following the stated comparison serving.
Price per 100 mg elemental Pack price ÷ total declared elemental mg in pack × 100 Used in the value score; the comparison table displays daily cost.

The 100 mg unit is arithmetic, not a recommended dose. A blend with undisclosed contributions retains its total elemental figure but carries a review note; we do not invent the share from each salt.

UK intake context

The NHS gives total daily needs of 300 mg for men and 270 mg for women aged 19–64, usually obtainable from a varied diet. These include food, not extra supplement targets. NHS magnesium guidance.

Magnesium glycinate vs citrate, oxide and threonate

Choosing a form: label facts and evidence limits
Form What to inspect Useful distinction
Glycinate / bisglycinate Declared elemental amount; oxide or other salts in the ingredients. Compare glycinate products. The name alone does not prove better sleep or tolerance.
Citrate Check whether it is citrate alone or an oxide-containing blend. Compare citrate products. Absorption evidence and symptom relief are different questions.
Oxide Separate compound mass from elemental magnesium. Small studies generally find lower absorption than several soluble salts.
L-threonate / Magtein Read the elemental quantity as well as the larger compound number. A branded-source claim is separate from verified testing.
Multi-form blends Check if the amount supplied by each salt is disclosed. A clear total does not identify each component’s contribution.

NIH ODS reviews comparative absorption. It does not establish a universal best form for every person or goal. Our scores evaluate the disclosed record and value; they do not rank absorption or treatment outcomes.

Sleep: include the newer trials

A 2021 review in older adults found low or very low quality evidence from three trials. A 2025 bisglycinate trial subsequently reported a small improvement in self-reported insomnia severity after four weeks using 250 mg elemental magnesium daily. Short duration and subjective outcomes limit certainty; this does not show superiority over citrate or verify a product in this table.

Leg and muscle cramps

The Cochrane review found a meaningful preventive benefit unlikely for common cramps in older adults. Pregnancy findings were inconsistent; the review did not provide eligible trial evidence for exercise-associated cramps.

Anxiety

A 2024 systematic review found promising results in some studies, but small samples, mixed populations and other active ingredients limited interpretation. These findings do not establish magnesium as an anxiety treatment.

When to take magnesium: morning or before bed?

No timing comparison here establishes a universal morning-versus-evening winner. The 2025 bisglycinate trial used 30–60 minutes before bed, but did not compare that schedule with morning use. Treat the schedule as study context, not proof of an optimal bedtime window.

Check the label and any medicine-spacing instructions below. Keep the stated elemental amount and full serving in view; a bedtime product name is not evidence of a sleep benefit.

Magnesium side effects and safe-dose context

Who should be cautious? If any of the following apply to you, speak to a healthcare professional before taking Magnesium - see the full detail below for why.
  • Kidney disease or impaired kidney function
  • Medicines that interact with magnesium
  • Multiple supplements, antacids or laxatives supplying magnesium
  • A label serving above the NHS supplemental-dose context

Supplemental doses above 400 mg can cause diarrhoea; the NHS says 400 mg or less is unlikely to cause harm for most people, with uncertainty about long-term high doses. This is general context, not a target. NHS guidance.

Kidney impairment increases toxicity risk. NIH ODS safety review. High-dose entries are flagged and excluded from our top-pick selection.

Magnesium interactions, vitamin D and zinc

Magnesium can interfere with absorption of some antibiotics and bisphosphonates. Diuretics and proton-pump inhibitors can affect magnesium status. Check spacing and suitability with a pharmacist using the specific medicine instructions. NIH interaction guidance.

For products containing vitamin D or zinc, compare each declared amount separately. Check overlapping ingredients and costs across your products; A combination label is not evidence that everyone needs all its ingredients.

Who might consider it?

Consider whether the goal is filling a dietary gap, following advice after a clinical assessment, or trying to address a symptom. These are different decisions. Review food sources and the amount already supplied by other products first. The comparison is designed to make label differences visible; it cannot choose a dose or diagnose the cause of fatigue, cramps or poor sleep.

How we assess magnesium quality

Testing review pending means the product evidence review is unfinished; it is not a failed test or a finding that no report exists. Open the Testing status for the current record and its sources.

A useful review checks the finished product, laboratory, batch, identity and elemental-magnesium results, relevant contaminants and any certification scope. Manufacturer claims and raw-material documents are not automatically independent evidence for the bottle.

Pending testing is excluded from provisional scores. The other components assess documented formulation, dose and label clarity, manufacturer information and value. The existing value calculation compares cost per 100 mg elemental magnesium; the table shows daily cost and daily dose for simpler comparison. Prime and commission contribute no points. Read the scoring method.

Magnesium deficiency and blood testing

Fatigue, weakness and cramps can occur with magnesium deficiency but do not diagnose it. Serum magnesium is commonly measured, yet does not fully reflect total stores. Interpret results alongside diet, medicines and kidney function with a clinician. NIH deficiency and assessment guidance.

Your questions, answered

What is the difference between magnesium glycinate and citrate?

They are different magnesium salts. Compare the declared elemental dose, ingredients and cost in the form guide, which separates absorption evidence from claims about symptoms.

Which magnesium is best for sleep?

The available studies do not establish one form as best. The sleep evidence summary includes both the older review and the small benefit reported in a newer bisglycinate trial.

How much magnesium should I take per day?

UK total-intake guidance includes magnesium from food. It is not a supplement target. Read the elemental-dose guide and supplemental safety context.

How long before bed should I take magnesium?

One recent trial used 30–60 minutes, but did not compare different times. That does not establish an ideal schedule. See the timing section and trial source.

Does magnesium help leg cramps?

For common cramps in older adults, the Cochrane review did not find a meaningful preventive benefit likely. See the cramp evidence and population limits.

Can I take magnesium with vitamin D or zinc?

Check each ingredient’s amount and duplicates across products. The combination and interaction guide explains what to review; an added ingredient is not an automatic benefit.

What happens if I take too much magnesium?

Diarrhoea can occur at high supplemental doses, and kidney impairment changes the risk. Read the safety panel and NHS/NIH sources before choosing a serving.
