Zinc Supplements

Compare zinc supplements by elemental zinc, disclosed form, copper and daily cost. Read the serving in context: dietary needs, label NRV and short-course lozenge use are different things. More zinc does not automatically mean a better product.

Glycine-associated zinc

Label wording
Preserve the form actually disclosed
Blend caution
Glycinate marketing and ingredient names can differ

Bisglycinate products are often marketed as chelated. We record the claim without assuming that every formulation has the same absorption or tolerance.

Citrate

Zinc associated with citrate

Label example
Zinc as citrate
Read carefully
Compound mass differs from elemental zinc

A 97mg zinc-citrate headline does not mean 97mg elemental zinc. We require a nutrient amount rather than applying a generic chemical conversion.

Gluconate

Zinc associated with gluconate

Formats here
Tablets and mixed-form lozenges
Compare
Actual zinc per daily serving

Gluconate is a legitimate comparison form. A cold study using a particular lozenge regimen does not establish equivalent results from an ordinary once-daily tablet.

Sulphate

A zinc salt used in supplements

Label example
Zinc sulphate monohydrate
Combination
May be paired with copper sulphate

The declared zinc nutrient amount is compared, not the weight of the hydrated salt. No automatic score deduction is made solely for this form.

Oxide

An inorganic zinc compound

Label detail
May appear within an amino-acid blend
Avoid assumptions
A blend is not necessarily bisglycinate

We preserve oxide where that is what the ingredient list names. Salt labels alone do not settle suitability; dose, composition and individual tolerance also matter.

Acetate

Zinc associated with acetate

Daily directions and short courses differ

Follow the specific UK label. As-needed lozenges with a maximum daily count are held outside this fixed-daily comparison until a suitable separate comparison is available.

Methionine

Zinc associated with methionine

Label example
Mono-L-methionine zinc sulphate
Branded example
OptiZinc where disclosed

The methionine label groups related disclosed ingredients. It does not verify a trademark licence, certify testing or earn an automatic formulation bonus.

Orotate

The contribution of each salt is unknown where no breakdown is supplied. A beadlet or delivery claim is recorded without assuming better clinical results.

Zinc + Copper

Two separately declared minerals

Table reading
Copper is shown in mg per day
Conversion
750µg copper = 0.75mg

Included with no disclosed amount is not the same as zero. Added copper does not cancel high-dose zinc cautions. We do not endorse a universal zinc-to-copper ratio.

Zinc dosage: UK references and our comparison bands

Keep these reference amounts separate
Context What it means
UK adult dietary need For ages 19–64, NHS guidance lists 9.5mg/day for men and 7mg/day for women. These are dietary needs, not extra supplement prescriptions. NHS zinc guidance.
Label reference: 10mg 10mg is the nutrition-labelling reference: 15mg is 150%. %NRV measures an amount relative to a label reference; it does not measure absorption or prove that an extra supplement is needed. UK reference table.
NHS supplement advice Do not take more than 25mg/day from zinc supplements unless advised by a doctor. This is supplement advice, distinct from a total-intake upper limit. NHS safety guidance.
European adult upper level The SCF/EFSA adult upper level is 25mg/day from all sources for habitual intake. Food contributes, so a 25mg supplement can take total intake above it. An upper level is not a target or a sharp toxicity threshold. SCF opinion on zinc, pp. 191–200.
Research and short courses Cold trials use different formulations and schedules. No universal “commonly studied” daily range is defensible across nutrition, deficiency treatment and short-course lozenges. Cochrane review.
Editorial dose context used in this adult comparison
Context What it means
Below 7mg Lower-dose product · amber. A small top-up may still suit a diet; this does not diagnose an inadequate intake. Dose component: clear-label starting score 95 minus 5.
7–10mg Reference-scale amount · green. A comparison band around UK dietary and labelling references, not a recommended supplement range. Dose component: no context deduction.
Above 10–25mg Higher supplemental dose · blue. Adds more than the label reference; extra amount is not automatically advantageous. Dose component: minus 15.
Above 25–under 50mg Above NHS supplement advice · amber. Dose component: minus 30 for this general daily comparison.
50mg or more High dose · copper context · amber. Dose component: minus 40. Copper inclusion does not remove this deduction.
Serving and intended use More than two solid units per day subtract 5; more than four subtract 10. Unknown elemental amounts receive no dose verdict. As-needed short courses stay outside the fixed-daily table rather than being averaged or treated as long-term regimens.

These are transparent editorial choices, not validated clinical cut-offs. Overall scores also include formulation clarity, price, manufacturer transparency and label clarity. Testing is excluded while pending. No salt, high-dose headline or copper addition automatically earns a bonus. General top picks are limited to clear daily products supplying 7–15mg; the 15mg ceiling is an editorial shortlist choice, not official dosage guidance.

Zinc benefits: nutrition versus extra supplementation

Normal function

Zinc supports DNA and protein production, immune function, wound healing and taste. Meeting a requirement is different from showing benefit from additional zinc in someone whose intake is already sufficient. NIH nutrient overview.

Form claims

The evidence does not establish one universally best retail zinc form. A named chelate or absorption claim alone does not prove superior clinical results. NIH discussion of forms.

Interpreting the score

This is a comparison of documented product attributes and general nutritional context. It is not a clinical effectiveness score, a diagnosis or a personalised prescription.

Colds and lozenges

A 2024 Cochrane review found little or no preventive benefit. Treatment might shorten a cold by roughly two days, but certainty was low and non-serious adverse effects increased. Results varied substantially by study. This does not validate every lozenge, an ordinary daily tablet or a high-dose routine. Read the review.

Zinc and testosterone

In a small study of 14 exercising men already consuming enough zinc, a zinc-containing ZMA supplement did not significantly increase total or free testosterone. This cannot answer every deficiency question, but it does not support a blanket “testosterone booster” claim. Koehler et al., 2009.

Skin and acne

A placebo-controlled inflammatory-acne trial reported benefit using zinc gluconate providing 30mg elemental zinc. That clinical context does not make 30mg a routine skin recommendation or prove benefit for all acne or hair complaints. Dreno et al., 1989.

When to take zinc

Use the actual label

Most recorded products specify food or a meal, while some specify before food. Follow the current product instructions. Persistent nausea is a reason to reassess use with a pharmacist rather than increase the dose.

Count the full serving

Two gummies or tablets can make one daily serving. The table uses that complete serving for both dose and cost. A label range uses its stated lower option and shows that basis; it does not imply the upper option is equally suitable.

Lozenges have distinct directions

Dissolving, chewing and swallowing are not interchangeable instructions. The captured UK Life Extension listing says one daily; Healthspan specifies an as-needed course. We do not substitute overseas directions or a trial protocol.

Zinc side effects and copper context

Who should be cautious? If any of the following apply to you, speak to a healthcare professional before taking Zinc - see the full detail below for why.
  • People taking prescribed medicines that interact with zinc
  • People using several zinc-containing products
  • People being treated for a zinc or copper disorder
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding adults; children require age-specific advice

Too much zinc

Large intakes can cause nausea, vomiting and appetite loss. At 50mg or more for weeks, zinc can interfere with copper absorption. Long-term use needs context even when the bottle contains copper. NIH excess-intake discussion.

Copper is not an antidote

Copper quantity and form are useful label facts. A fixed ratio is not a universal rule, and the presence of copper does not demonstrate that a high-zinc formulation is appropriate indefinitely. Compare total intake and duration with the guidance above.

When individual advice matters

Discuss supplementation with your clinician when investigating deficiency, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with malabsorption or after gastrointestinal surgery. Existing copper disorders and prescribed zinc regimens require individual management rather than this general product ranking.

Zinc with copper, vitamin C and medicines

Read co-actives and medicine timing separately
Context What it means
Copper The table states the recorded daily amount, “Included · dose undisclosed”, “Not listed” or “Unknown”. Not listed means no copper in the captured ingredient list; it is not a laboratory result. No ideal Zn:Cu ratio is assumed.
Vitamin C and other actives A combination can duplicate nutrients already in your stack. One listed product also contains 10mg B6; another has 200mg vitamin C. Read amounts on the product page and check your vitamin C products too.
Certain antibiotics Quinolone or tetracycline antibiotics are generally taken at least 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after zinc. Confirm the specific medicine instructions with a pharmacist. NIH interaction guidance.
Penicillamine Separate by at least one hour and follow the prescriber’s directions. NIH interaction guidance.
Iron Taking 25mg or more supplemental iron at the same time can reduce zinc absorption. A pharmacist can help arrange prescribed supplements; do not stop iron treatment on the basis of this table. NIH mineral interaction discussion.

Zinc foods and possible deficiency

Food first

Meat, seafood, dairy, eggs, beans, nuts and whole grains provide zinc; fortified cereals can contribute. Phytates in some plant foods reduce absorption. A vegan label describes the product, not whether an individual needs it. NIH foods and intake context.

Deficiency needs interpretation

Malabsorption, gastrointestinal surgery and alcohol use disorder can increase risk. Taste changes or delayed healing are not specific enough to diagnose zinc deficiency. Review symptoms, diet and medical history together. NIH risk groups and symptoms.

What testing should establish

Testing review pending

A pending label means the product evidence review is unfinished. Manufacturer statements such as GMP, lab tested or Informed Sport are separate from verified evidence for the relevant product and batch.

What useful evidence would show

Look for a report identifying the exact product and batch, elemental zinc and any claimed copper amount, analytical methods and relevant contaminant results. A logo or a generic factory certificate is not interchangeable with a product-specific report.

Why the scores are provisional

Testing contributes no score while excluded. The shared display uses clean rounded weights, while the total is calculated consistently by the central scoring helper. This prevents missing research being presented as either a pass or a failure.

Zinc blood tests: what results can and cannot tell you

What is measured

A zinc blood test generally measures zinc in serum or plasma; UK labs commonly report µmol/L. It is a circulating concentration, not a complete inventory of body zinc. Use the supplied lab interval and clinical context. Liverpool laboratory guidance.

Why one result is limited

Inflammation and low albumin can lower circulating zinc. Sampling conditions matter; some labs prefer fasting samples. A low result alone cannot set a supplement dose. Bolton laboratory handbook.

A useful clinical question

Testing may help investigate a suspected deficiency or monitor a prescribed regimen when interpreted with symptoms, diet and other results. It is not a universal screening requirement before buying a supplement. Discuss whether testing would change management before choosing a blood test.

Your questions, answered

How much zinc should I take?

There is no single extra supplement dose for everyone. Use the UK dietary, labelling and safety references in the dose guide, then consider food, other supplements and any clinical advice. The coloured bands are comparison context.

Is 50mg zinc suitable every day?

It is in our high-dose band and above NHS general supplement advice. Read the copper and duration cautions in the safety section; the presence of copper does not remove them.

Is zinc picolinate better than bisglycinate?

A form name or uptake claim does not establish superior outcomes for every user. Compare elemental amount, ingredient clarity, serving and cost; neither form earns an automatic premium.

Do I need copper with zinc?

Not necessarily. Copper inclusion is a formulation choice that needs the context of zinc dose, duration and total diet. An undisclosed amount is not zero, and no universal ratio is endorsed here.

Do zinc lozenges prevent colds?

The review summarised above found little or no prevention benefit. A possible reduction in duration during treatment has important uncertainty and formulation differences. Daily supplements are not interchangeable with trial regimens.

Can zinc boost testosterone?

Meeting zinc needs supports normal nutrition. The small zinc-sufficient study above did not show a testosterone increase; this page does not recommend zinc as a general testosterone booster.

Can I take zinc with vitamin C?

Several products combine them. Check both amounts and other products in your stack; a combination label does not itself prove better results.

Why are some products missing from the table?

Products are held for review when core amounts, co-actives or a fixed adult daily serving need clarification. As-needed short courses are not averaged into an invented daily regimen.

Why is the testing score pending?

Detailed product testing research is a separate review. The comparison does not turn unreviewed evidence into “no public evidence” or a verified badge.
