Biotin dose: US intake references and high-dose context

For US adults aged 19+, the National Academies' Adequate Intake (AI) is 30 mcg/day; lactation uses 35 mcg/day. An AI is used because the evidence was insufficient to establish an EAR and RDA. [1]

FDA's Daily Value is also 30 mcg for adults and children aged 4+, which is a labelling reference. [2] Neither figure means that a supplement providing thousands of micrograms is more effective.

Keep comparisons in micrograms. 1 mg equals 1,000 mcg, so a 5 mg product provides 5,000 mcg. No tolerable upper intake level has been established by the Food and Nutrition Board, but that absence should not be presented as evidence of unlimited safety. [1]

What the evidence says about biotin

Biotin deficiency can cause hair, skin and nail changes, but deficiency evidence should not be generalized to healthy adults. NIH ODS describes the evidence for hair, skin and nail supplementation as limited. [1] A 2024 review found only three eligible oral-biotin hair studies; the highest-quality placebo-controlled study found no difference between biotin and placebo. [5]

Older brittle-nail evidence used 2.5 mg/day and reported improvement among many evaluable participants, but the study lacked a placebo control and had substantial attrition. [6]

Hair growth

High-quality evidence does not currently support routine biotin supplementation for hair growth in people without a demonstrated deficiency. [5]

Nails

Small, older uncontrolled studies suggest possible benefit for brittle nails, but they do not establish a benefit for normal nails or justify choosing the highest-dose product. [6]

Correcting deficiency

Biotin is an essential nutrient and deficiency can cause clinical problems, but deficiency is rare in healthy people consuming mixed diets. [1] Suspected deficiency should not be reduced to retail dose ranking.

When to take biotin

No reviewed source establishes a universal morning-versus-evening advantage for ordinary biotin supplementation. Follow the product label unless a clinician gives different instructions. For blood tests, timing matters because circulating biotin can interfere with some assays. The required abstention period varies by dose, test and assay platform, so follow instructions from the ordering clinician or laboratory rather than a generic internet rule. [4] [12]

The Food and Nutrition Board did not establish a UL for biotin because available data were insufficient to identify toxicity at high intakes. [1] This should be stated as 'no UL established', not 'no upper limit' or 'safe at any dose'.

FDA warns that biotin can significantly interfere with certain laboratory tests and has continued to highlight falsely low troponin results as a safety concern. [3] A small human study using 10 mg/day for one week found interference in some, but not all, biotinylated immunoassays. [7] The affected tests and duration vary by platform and dose. [4] [12]

Biotin in hair, skin and nail blends

Hair, skin and nail products often combine biotin with other vitamins, minerals or branded ingredients. Record every active separately. Evidence for another ingredient cannot be credited to biotin, and a multi-ingredient label makes it harder to identify which ingredient caused an effect or adverse reaction. FDA requires Supplement Facts labels to identify dietary ingredients and amounts per serving. [11]

Biotin supplementation has a clear nutritional role when intake or deficiency is genuinely a concern, but true deficiency is rare. [1] People considering biotin mainly for hair or nails should know that evidence in non-deficient adults is limited. People expecting laboratory testing should disclose biotin-containing supplements to the clinician or laboratory because results can be distorted. [3]

How to compare biotin testing evidence

For biotin products, look for evidence that confirms identity, potency/strength, composition and relevant contaminants for the exact finished product. FDA dietary-supplement CGMP rules address these quality controls. [9]

Independent programs such as USP Verification can add evidence through facility auditing, documentation review and product testing, but verification does not prove that biotin will deliver a cosmetic outcome. [10] A manufacturer's 'third-party tested' statement should remain distinct from a verifiable product certification or batch report.

Blood testing & your results

Biotin can interfere with laboratory assays that use biotin-streptavidin technology. FDA has warned about incorrect results, including falsely low troponin values.
